This game will involve adult themes, morally ambiguous characters and dark lines. While players do not have to love every character, thread, situation or line, we do expect all players to respect the ideas and inspiration of others. If a player finds themselves in a situation in which they are uncomfortable and unable to resolve it on their own, please contact the mods, we will do our best to resolve the situation. The bottom line is that we're all here to have a bit of fun and we are all adults, so we just want everyone to try and play nice.
In and Out of Character
There is a difference between the player and the character they are writing, please remember and respect that difference. There are many ways in which this line should be respected, including but not limited to: Characters should not automatically know everything that their player knows, players should not automatically personally dislike another player because their characters had an in-character disagreement, etc. Players should also keep in mind that IC actions will have IC consequences. Please use common sense and if in doubt: Ask.
Godmodding
Controlling the actions of another character, dictating emotions and power playing is not tolerated. Two warnings will be issued: We all have a bad day. If the mods receive complaints about godmodding or powerplaying after that, the player will be removed from the game. Please communicate with your fellow writers to avoid this situation entirely.
Post Length
Yes, we are a writing game and we want to RP with people who genuinely enjoy writing. The average post should be two solid paragraphs, a paragraph consisting of at least three complete sentences. The occasional shorter tag to move the scene along or give the other writer a chance to react is fine, but it should not be the norm. One and two line tags are never acceptable and will result in warnings and/or removal from the game.
Thread Code
For the sake of consistency and the ease of navigation, the game has a preferred thread code, which is both listed below and is located on the anchor tag of the threading community. Please use this or something very similar to this when posting threads. Please place the written portion of the thread under a cut so as to prevent the page from stretching and to make navigation easier. If a thread is marked as "open" or "OTA" (open to anyone), any character or any number of characters will be free to join in the thread provided they can find a way to fit into the setting.
Age Requirements
Due to this game containing mature themes, we ask that all applicants be 18 years of age or older.
Characters and PBs all need to be 18 or older, however we do encourage older. Keep in mind this game is composed of a group of elite intellectuals and both education and real world experience are required before they will be hired by the Company, so it is very unlikely that someone fresh out of high school would fit this game.
Activity
Activity checks will happen once a month, only threads or logs posted in the threading community will be counted as activity. Every character will need a minimum of one completed thread per activity period, warnings will be issued if a player consistently deserts threads. While characters are free to update their personal journals, these kinds of entries will not count towards activity checks.
Activity Checks
Activity checks will occur monthly. Mods will post an entry in the OOC on the first of each month and all players will have one week to reply to the thread. To pass the check, players will need to link to at least one completed thread for each of their active characters, off rotation characters will require a report regarding their whereabouts and when to expect them back. Players are allowed to skip one activity check by requesting a hiatus, any hiatus longer than one activity period should be cleared by the mods. Hiatuses must be requested before the activity check thread is posted.
Off Rotation
The off rotation system should be used to allow players to play several different kinds of characters and send them on various adventures with fewer limitations. If an off rotation character has not been played in six weeks, they will need to become active in the game once more or they will be dropped from the game. Please use the off rotation feature to explore different characters and personalities, do not abuse it to "PB squat." Please note that characters who are off rotation are not on hiatus and will be required to "check in" with an update during activity checks. More information on the off rotation system is located in the FAQ.
Character Limits
We expect this game to remain small, so we are happy for players to pick up several characters to help fill the Company, so long as they are able to keep up activity. Each player is allowed up to nine characters each, and at least three of these must be active (not away on off rotation) each activity check. We do reserve the right to request that characters who have not been played in six weeks be returned to active status or dropped. If mods must request a player drop a character, that player will not be eligible to apply another character for one month.
Journal Names
Please have your journal name relate to your character somehow. Journal names can include their name, it can be a descriptor, a nod to their history or some element which defines them, we are not going to be picky. Please try to avoid journal names which are cluttered with extra numbers, dashes, x's, etc.
Icons
While we have no preferred or required styles for icons, we do ask that you have at least five icons featuring your play by uploaded.
Email and AIM
We require all players to provide an email address or an AIM screen name for contact, but please do not panic. Email addresses can be used specifically for RP, they do not have to be a personal one, nor does it have to relate to your character. We have simply found that some form of contact causes a great deal more reliability from applicants and reduces the likelihood of flaking. Unless otherwise stated, all AIM names listed on the Players page are OOC, and should used to contact the player. If you wish to have in character AIM conversations, please ensure the other player is aware of what you are doing.
Contact Entry
We ask all players to keep a contact entry up for each of their characters. This is an easy way for mods, fellow players and potential applicants to get in touch with you for plot, questions and whatever else. We do not require it to be exceptionally pretty, but please set the entry to screen comments. You can screen comments by selecting "All Comments" in the Comment Screening option when posting or editing a journal. If you are still unsure how to make a post with screened comments, please ask the mods, we will gladly assist you.
Histories
Your character's history should be posted in your journal for other players and potential applicants to access.
The Company is an elite organization, and as mods, we are pretty much in charge of "hiring" for the Company. Characters who are unqualified for a job, be it lack of education, experience, mental issues, etc, may be denied from the game because the Company would not consider them good applicants. Mods are eager to see a wide range of personalities and skills, but we also have to consider if the character would be a beneficial employee, so please keep this in mind when crafting characters.
Holds
Holds last for one week. While we do not accept challenges, you can submit an application for that PB while a hold is still active, it will be reviewed immediately after the hold expires. One three day extension will be granted upon request, this needs to be requested before the hold expires. You may submit applications without placing a hold. If your hold expires without an application, you may still apply at any time, but you will need to wait one week before placing a new hold.
Revisions
We do reserve the right to revise or alter these rules as needed in the future, but will always alert players of any changes.
